'I Wonder' - A Poem.

Mental Health. I'm sure every one of us is familiar with these two words; either we've read it in a magazine, heard it in school, or spoke about it in several of our family/friends' conversations.

But does any of us actually know what this term means? According to Wikipedia, mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. As a student pursuing psychology, I feel that this term is much more broader than that. It more likely is subjective and is relative to the growth of an individual. Mental health comprises of work productivity, coping with the daily stresses of life, realizing one's own capabilities and effectively being able to apply them and hence being able to make a worthwhile contribution to society.

Mental health is so important, more so than physical well-being. The mind is our engine and our body is our machine. But, if the engine is rusty and not taken care of, the machine will never be able to perform to its full capability.

However, despite this term being spoken of several times and in several places, it would take a while for it to actually reach a point where everyone is able to openly and freely speak about their issues and have them addressed at a more confident scale. Although mental health is spoken of as being very important, it is also very fragile. We must be strong enough to continue making our mind strong, as we will inevitably face several hurdles throughout life. Addressing mental health issues would be the first step to do so, and being supportive of not only others, but of ourselves is extremely crucial. My poem, titled 'I Wonder', is a glimpse into someone dealing with mental health issues. You can have a look at it below:

As always,

Much Love,

I Wonder

I Wonder,

if there are tears in her eyes,

or if they are just,

shining reflections from the stars in the sky.

I Wonder,

what does she do at night,

when we are asleep,

does she bury herself in her blanket,

suffocating herself neck-deep?

I Wonder,

when she smiles,

is it real,

or is it something forced into her body,

like a drug from a vial.

I Wonder,

if she covers her arms for a reason,

or just because she doesn't like the cold.

I Wonder,

if her laugh is genuine,

or is it something that is controlled?

I Wonder,

when she looks into the mirror,

does she see the beauty within her,

or is it all just a confusing blur?

I Wonder,

if she ever feels peace,

all that over thinking must be tiring,

doesn't she ever want it to stop,

and sleep?

Can she ever learn who she is,

someone equally worthy of love?

Is she aware that,

someone will be by her side,

through all that rain and thunder?

Does she understand that,

what's necessary is being who you truly are?

This is something I never cease to think about, and,

I Wonder.
